Lawn Mower Maintenance Checklist Guide

Your lawn mower needs regular maintenance. Otherwise, its performance decreases with time and its lifespan shortens. This is why you need a lawn mower maintenance checklist to keep the machine in good shape.

It’s a good idea to inspect and service your yard equipment once a year. Don’t forget to change oil, spark plugs, etc. as per manufacturer instructions.

  • Thorough Cleaning

To maintain a mower, clean it once or twice a year. First, empty the gas tank. Then disconnect the spark plug wire from the mower and turn the machine on its side.

You need to wash it well to get rid of dirt and dry grass. And a pressure jet hose works best for this purpose.  Rub it in with a soft brush and soapy water. Lastly, rinse it with clean water.

  • Replace Mower filter

Move to the next step after a thorough cleaning. Now you need to to replace or clean the air filter. Ideally, you should replace the mower filter every 3 months. This will ensure your lawn mower engine and parts can smoothly run.

  • Replace Paper Filters

Lawn mower paper filters also accumulate debris. So, clean them when they get dirty.

You can easily remove plastic foam filters and wash them with hot soapy water before air-drying them. Once they are completely dry, apply two tablespoons of clean trimmer oil evenly across and inside the filter. Coat it lightly.

Quick Lawn Mower Maintenance Checklist Tips

At the end of the growing season, you need to store the lawn mower properly.

After using it for the last time at the end of the growing season, empty the gas tank. Leave the engine running until the fluid runs out. Now you can place it in your garage until the next growing season.

Keep the gas tank empty until spring. If the mower has a separate oil tank, empty it and fill it with new oil.
